News this week.

Tuesday I was fortunate enough to be emailed by a lovely lady who is a teacher in our local school district. She has 5 autistic children she wants to bring here during the summer to 'volunteer' on the farm. WONDERFUL news! We are very excited to have the children here!

Other possible plans would be:

Town parades
Town fair
Equine Affaire (this fall)
Breed show at Devon (also this fall)

So little to do, so much time.
Scratch that, reverse it: so much to do, so little time! (circa Willy Wonka, in case you were wondering)

Sunday update.

Yesterday was so busy! We were visited by Dr. Horowitz & her husband, they wanted to meet Miss Brandy. Happily, they've agreed to sign up to house two retirement ponies on their property. No doubt any pony would consider themselves lucky to be living in such a nice location!

Not long after they left, Melanie and her family arrived to start Boot Camp! We didn't have a lot of time yesterday, most of it was spent teaching pony safety and talking about ground rules for pony keeping.

Maggie has been bred to Doodle, with any luck she won't come back into heat. That means a foal sometime next April around the 17th. Wish us luck!

Debut.

More news since my last published update. All the mares are turned out together and are operating in full "herd" mode. This is the best thing for Brandy, learning herd dynamics and also having more play time out in a larger paddock.

This also means that Doodle is back in his own paddock full time. No more swapping ponies day/night now. Which means everyone gets full Sunshine Rights during the day. Maggie has come into heat (day 1). Kind of a dead give away as both Doodle and Maggie keep hollering to each-other (this is not entertaining at 5:30 am!). This is great news as I was beginning to wonder if she ever would show her cycle. It's the first heat I've witnessed since she came to the farm in October 2004. That's not entirely abnormal, some mares don't show heat when the lighting during the day is shorter. Now that there are nice long days, it's natural to see this behavior.

Since both Doodle and Maggie are maidens my work is cut out for me. Maggie did behave beautifully for her first attempts being in season with a novice stallion. Doodle also did quite well. We didn't have a successful breed, but we have plenty of time for that. It is best not to rush them or get the mare and/or stallion frustrated. This is the true test for Doodle, he did behave respectfully toward me and listened to my queues which I know is quite difficult for him sometime.

With a little luck both Dandy and Maggie will be in foal to Doodle this month. That's two babies for next year which means two more children will get ponies in 2007. It is still too early to tell if Brandy will be placed in the breeding program based on her conformation and personality or if she'll be trained to assist a child. We've got a few more months to decide that. She is eating solid food (grain and hay whenever she can) and her teeth are coming in. She's had her first lessons with being led which proved to be cute and fun. She did get the hang of it after a few moments and we'll try again later today.

Saturday we look forward to seeing Melanie!

Brandywine MacClennan & Farm Update

Little Brandy is growing bigger and stronger every day. She is already eating Mum's grain and hay and going exploring in her paddock all by herself. Brandy is very brave and very curious. She'll come greet visitors at her gate and stand to be petted. Most days she's not bothered at all to wear her little blue halter for 1/2 hour at a time but we really haven't tried anything longer than that. This week we'll have our first lessons on being led and we'll also be paddocked with Auntie Bette. Auntie Maggie may be introduced a bit later in the week.

Doodle is still quite a handful, though he has his better days. Today was one of them. He behaved like a true gentleman on the cross ties this morning and did his job well (and respectfully!) when teasing out the mares.

This coming Saturday Melanie's family starts their 6 week Pony Bootcamp class here at our farm. We'll teach her family how to care for their Personal Ponies and how to work with Melanie using the ponies. I think Melanie will really enjoy growing up with two fuzzy trolls to love. Certainly the ponies will consider themselves lucky!

Jake completed his level 2 obedience class last week and got his diploma. He's very proud of himself! He's been signed up for another 6 week class in off-leash obedience. The kids really love coming to visit the farm and playing with Jake (admittedly, sometimes even distracting them from brushing the ponies! Jake still doesn't understand why Miss Brandy doesn't play with him, though.

That's all for now! :)
